I hadn’t planned on going abroad but one day I decided to go and talk with the international affairs coordinator Marja Saarela about my options. She suggested that I check the TOP-rekry part from our school’s website. There is a list of placements from both Finland and abroad. One placement from Spain caught my eye and I decided to apply for it although my expectations weren’t high since I thought there would be plenty of people applying for these positions. As my surprise, I got a reply from the company almost immediately after sending in my application and we agreed to have a Skype interview during the same day. At the interview they confirmed that I’d been accepted and would start my internship in Seville on January 14th.
I had applied for the internship quite early so I had lots of time to take care of all the practical things such as dealing with KELA, applying for grants and simply making sure that all my school work would be done before leaving. Again, Marja Saarela was a big help with all of this. She also suggested that I should apply for the grant that the Foundation of Finnish Business College grants for students that are about to do an internship abroad (http://www.slk-saatio.fi/apurahat.html). Helsinki Business College also supports the students going abroad with 800€ which can be used for example when booking the flights. It’s very likely that the internship is unpaid so it’s clever to apply for grants and benefits.
After dealing with everything I finally arrived in Spain on the 10th of January. I had rented a room from a residence in the middle of the Seville city center where I live together with about 10 other interns from Finland, Holland, UK and Canada.
On Monday January 14th, after few days of settling down to my new surroundings, I started my internship in a company called Spain Internship SC. It’s a student services organization which provides global internship and traineeship services for students and recent graduates. They collaborate with over 300 companies in various fields so they have good possibilities to arrange internships of any kind. Spain Internship has created a branch called Europe Internship which is a website to publish and look for internship placements.
I worked mainly at Europe Internship and my tasks were e.g. website maintenance, CRM, marketing communication, creating and maintaining statistics and proofreading. My final project was to create an internship mediation service for Europe Internship. You can find it here: http://www.europe-internship.com/internship-mediation-service/. I made collaborations with Spain, Italy and China and now we are receiving applications for their internship placements on a daily basis.
Although I work 40h/week I’ve still had time to travel a bit. So far I have been to Còrdoba, Càdiz, Madrid, Granada and Ronda and also in Albufeira, Lagos and Sagres in Portugal.
My internship will end in about a month after which I will graduate, but I’ll be staying in Seville until the early July. I’m going to take a TEFL (teach English as a foreign language http://www.teflcourseseville.com/) course here in June and possibly return back to Spain next autumn for work.
The temperature here lately has been a solid +30c which is a nice change for the Finnish weather! There are some things that I miss about Finland but living in Spain has been absolutely amazing and I can recommend doing an internship here to everyone.
